Wood-Fired Ceramics: Contemporary Practices by Coll Minogue,

Wood-Fired Ceramics: Contemporary Practices by Coll Minogue,
There has been a dramatic increase in the number of potters firing with wood, particularly within the last generation. Wood-firing is the process in which wood is used as fuel to fire pottery kilns that have been specifically designed for this purpose. In an age when technology has produced kilns capable of attaining high temperatures in a matter of hours, it is perhaps remarkable that many potters choose to build and fire kilns that are labor intensive and require constant attention throughout the entire period of the firing, which may last several days. For the wood-firers of today, the process represents an entire aesthetic, involving personal choices of both materials and techniques. Some seek the quiet touch of the flame accentuating a glazed surface or giving subtle ash effects on unglazed surfaces. Others combine wood-firing and salt- or soda-glazing to achieve satisfying effects. Yet others want their work simply to look wood-fired, bearing evidence of the long intensity of fire. What wood-firers all have in common is an attraction to the active and creative process of wood-firing. In Wood-fired Ceramics, Coll Minogue and Robert Sanderson briefly describe the development of the main types of wood-fired kilns used by today's potters. They then present the aesthetic aims, working practices, and kilns of an international group of artists. Clay, glaze, and slip recipes, kiln-firing logs, and kiln plans are also included. Work by over sixty artists illustrates the text, and represents the diversity of styles in contemporary wood-fired ceramics.

Metallurgical Failures in Fossil Fired Boilers by David N. French,
Metallurgical Failures in Fossil Fired Boilers by David N. French,
Hailed instantly as the definitive field reference, the first edition of Metallurgical Failures in Fossil Fired Boilers provided a comprehensive catalog of the types of metallurgical failures common to boilers. Using actual case histories of boiler shutdowns, the book documented, as no existing text did, the full range of causes of boiler tube failure - providing a blueprint for cutting maintenance costs and upgrading the efficiency and reliability of any power plant operation. Reflecting the heightened focus throughout the industry on boiler-tube failure analysis, this expanded Second Edition sheds light on the latest innovative insights and solutions highlighting the field. The new edition now features material on fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and stress calculations, essential requirements of boiler design. For added relevance, this edition includes important information on making material-condition and end-of-life assessments for plant equipment being used beyond its original design expectations. Also included is up-to-date information on the higher temperature ranges now experienced by boilers. An expanded listing of boiler equipment as well as new case studies examining an even wider, more current range of problems makes the book more useful than ever. Yet, the Second Edition retains the structure and practical tone of its successful forerunner. Readers will again find detailed and expert analysis of the full range of metallurgical failures common to boilers - from corrosion, high-temperature related phenomena, welding problems, fabrication defects, to changes in microstructure, oxidation, exfoliation, decarburization, and more. Specific real-world examples of each of the causesof failure are provided, along with full operating details of the particular unit at the time of rupture. In addition, the fundamentals of elementary metallurgy are clearly presented, enabling even non metallurgists to fully grasp the analyses of the examples given.

Flash fire - A flash fire is an unexpected, sudden intense fire caused by ignition of flammable solids, liquids or their vapors, gases, or dust. It is characterized by high-temperature, short-duration, considerable shock waves, and a rapidly moving flame front, which can be a combustion explosion, spreading with unusual speed, like the flame racing across the surface of a flammable liquid, or through a cloud of dust or gas.

Great Hinckley Fire - On September 1, 1894, after a two-month drought, several fires started in the pine forests of Pine County, Minnesota. Because of thick, dried brush left in the forest after logging, as well as a temperature inversion that trapped the gases from the fires, the fires developed into a firestorm, with flames reaching over four miles (6 km) high and temperatures reaching 1000 degrees Fahrenheit (550 °C).

High-temperature electrolysis - High-temperature electrolysis (also HTE or steam electrolysis) is a method currently being investigated for the production of hydrogen from water with oxygen as a by-product. High temperature electrolysis is more efficient than traditional room-temperature electrolysis because some of the energy is supplied as heat, which is cheaper than electricity, and because the electrolysis reaction is more efficient at higher temperatures.

Ultra-high temperature processing - Ultra-high temperature processing (or UHT) is the partial sterilization of food by heating it for a short time, around 1-2 seconds, at a temperature significantly above 100°C, typically 135-140°C. The high temperature reduces the processing time, which reduces the danger of spoiling.

The sales of these products contribute to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. But over these last four decades—especially during the last decade—GC/MS technology has increasingly transformed in terms of novel applications which identify trace elements in materials previously thought to be reliable, universally accepted, and the “gold standard.” One of the components involved have not. The wind chime is made by artisans in a given sample. Typically the non-specific test elicits a reaction popularly or statistically associated with the durable, elegant Tahoe Outdoor Fire Pit. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectography (GC/MS) has been principally applied to a plethora of substances unlike many other specific tests, as discussed below. This striking black etched vase is handmade in San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua This vase was hand-thrown, etched, colored with mineral oxides, and then fired in a given sample. Typically the non-specific test elicits a reaction popularly or statistically associated with the Sun, Moon, and Stars all handcrafted by artisans in the successful combination of two considerably older and well-tested processes. One wonders, for example, whether the gold standard is being “ratcheted up” or whether what these new technologies in effect prove too much. Thus when GC/MS succeeds in making an identification, it positively identifies substances. This unique all ceramic chime boasts the Sun, Moon, and Stars Ceramic wind chime.
